Actinic Keratosis, also commonly refered to as solar keratosis is a pre-cancerous lesion which mostly appears as small crusty spots on the skin. It is typically located in areas chronically exposed to the sun, such as the face, scalp and neck, forearms, upper chest and hands.
If left untreated, 20% of actinic keratoses may develop into a type of skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma.
The Patients epidermis must be monitored with regular screenings. Especially fair-skinned people are considered susceptible, and require regular full-body skin cancer screenings by a specialized dermatologist. The best way to prevent Actinic Keratosis is through careful sun protection.
